Party Set Up Calendar
2 Weeks Before
Create invitations inviting 5 friends to the party (6 girls total can play).
Decide who the Host will be (usually the mother or other adult). The Host should read over the Party Outline and all other clues, games and information so that they will be totally familiar with the game play.
1 Week Before
Get commitments from the guests and deliver them their Mystery Guides.
Print out the clues. Cut them apart by character and place them in envelopes marked "Round 1 Clues," "Round 2 clues" etc... (some parts of the clues have parentheses where you must fill in the name of your town or your school).
Print out the mystery introduction for the host to read.
Print out the mystery solution and put it in an envelope marked "solution."
Make name badges that list the characters names on them.
Buy the puzzle for the Puzzle game, assemble it and write the clue on it. Gather other materials needed for the Crab Field Game and Riddle game. Print out the clues for the Charades Game.
Plan the food.
Buy tropical island themed decorations.
Day of Party
Decorate with a tropical island theme. Make a sign to hang on the front door that says "Welcome to the Blue Shell Inn." Cheep flower leis and other Hawaiian decor are available at discount stores. You may want to get an old radio and plan a "crime scene" where the radio is broken.
Set up the craft table, with the craft supplies all ready for the arriving guests.
Play some tropical music in the background while guests do the crafts.
Set up other games.
As girls arrive give them name badges with their characters names.
Once all girls have arrived and completed their craft, the Host begins the mystery by reading the Game Introduction.

Why did you write this?
My daughter is a big fan of the Nancy Drew computer mystery games and when she turned 11 she wanted to have a Nancy Drew party. We searched and searched the Internet for party ideas, but there were very few ideas for the pre-teen age group of girls and even fewer ideas for mystery parties. I remember playing a few boxed roll playing mystery games as an adult so I searched the Internet for the same thing for kids. I found a few sites (even some original scripts offered on eBay.) But they were all expensive $29.99 up to $49.99. Way outside my budget.
So I borrowed one of the mystery box games for adults from a friend and after looking it over I decided I could write one of my own, but for pre-teen girls. Then I decided I'd throw in some games and activities to keep it exciting. The result is this mystery party game The Blue Shell.
The birthday party was a big success! None of the girls had ever been to a party like this before and once they figured it out, they really got into it. The next day I had one mom call me and tell me that her daughter told her it was the funnest party she had ever been to.
So why post it here for free? That's a good question! After all the hours of work I went into to design it and write it I thought it was a shame for it to sit and gather dust on my hard drive. Surely there are other girls out there that would want to play a mystery game like this. Surely there are other mothers that don't have the $49.99 to fork out for a script and that would love to find this for free. So to that end I post it here.
If you use my script and like it you can buy me lunch. If you were my neighbor, we could go to McDonald's and watch our kids play on the play land, but since that is not possible, by clicking on the Pay Pal donation link you can do the next best thing.
Enjoy!

Party Outline
Party Outline
Background Info for the Host to know:
Setting: A small island in the Family Islands of the Bahamas called Little Iguana Island. On the island there is only one building, a bed-and-breakfast called the Blue Shell, and a boat dock. This island, in the Family Islands, offers miles and miles of unexplored beaches, caves and cays which allow for the best scuba diving, fishing and sailing.
Evidence that is presented during the game:
1) The boat is lowered in and out of the water by a winch system. Someone on the island must have purposefully lowered the boat into the water and set it adrift.
2) The radio in the kitchen is located right by the lemon ice machine. It has been pushed off of the counter and smashed on the floor.
Mystery:
Who wanted to strand the girls on the island???
Between each round of reading clues and asking questions the girls play a game. This helps keep the party active and interesting. Below are the games that I used but feel free to come up with games and activities of your own.
1)Introduction Game: Necklace or Leis Making
While the girls are arriving have a table set up for a leis or necklace making craft. This gives late comers time to arrive before introducing the mystery.
We used leather cord and seashell beads I bought at the local craft store.
2)Read the Introduction to the Mystery and the 1st set of Clues
Have the girls read the first clue to the group and then read the second clue to themselves. After the clue reading let the girls ask each other questions. Remind the girls that they must answer all questions honestly from what they know about their characters. If they don't know the answer to a question they should say that they don't know. It helps if the host or the birthday girl ask some questions to get the ball rolling. The party guests will get the hang of it in no time.
3)Game: Angry Crab Crossing
Make up a story that the group is being chased and they need to get across a field of angry crabs. Give each group paper plates (about 1/3 the number of plates as people), explaining that when they step on these plates, they will not get bitten by the crabs. The group must figure out how to get the entire group from point A to point B, from one side of the crab field to the other. Only one person at a time can stand on a plate, and the plates may be picked up and moved as often as needed. The key to the game is that only part of the team will be able to cross the crab field at a time and one person will need to work their way back across the field to help the rest of the team across. A time limit may be imposed.
4)Read the 2nd Set of Clues and discuss
5)Game: Puzzle
In advance put the puzzle together. Flip puzzle upside down and write your clue. The clue I wrote gave them a hint as to what the snack we were going to eat was. Have the group work on a glass cutting board or table so that when the puzzle is assembled they can read the clue on the bottom. I used a 100 piece puzzle that was put together by the group in no time.
6)Eat the Snack. Open Presents.
7)Read the 3rd Set of Clues and discuss
8)Game: Beach Charades
Act out this thing found on an island or the beach. Your friends only have 3 guesses before you have to sit down. If your friends guess correctly you get to move on.
Crab
Hula Girl
Palm Tree
Sun bather
Sea Gull
Swimmer
Dolphin
Fishing
Putting on SunscreenPutting on Sunglasses
Crab Hula Girl
9)Read the 4th Set of Clues and discuss
10)Last Game: Riddle Game
Set up:
In advance, gather several different containers (I used shoe boxes). Each container has a number on the outside. One of the numbers is the correct answer the the riddle. The other numbers are just there to fool the participants.
Prepare locked box. I used a footlocker that I locked with a combination lock. You could use any box with a lock or even a bike lock if that is what you have. Either a key or a number combination lock would be okay - but if it is a key lock, be sure to have enough keys to put in the wrong answer boxes. Put the solution to the mystery in an envelope marked "Solution" and place it in the locked box.
Put the correct lock combination or correct key in the container (shoe box) with the correct answer to the riddle on the outside.
Game Play:
Show the girls the 4 or 5 boxes with answers written on the outside of them. Read them the riddle and have them as a group decide which box has the correct answer. Let them keep guessing until they get it right.
Riddle
Cathy has six pairs of black flip flops and six pairs of brown flip flops in her drawer. In complete darkness, how many flip flops must she take from the drawer in order to be sure to get a pair that match? Think carefully!!
Answer:
13. She could possibly take out 6 black left foot flip flops and then 6 brown left flip flops, the next one would have to be either the right foot or left foot match.
11) Once the team has chosen the correct box, gotten the correct combination(key) and opened the locked box and gotten the "solution" envelope. Let the birthday girl read the solution to the party goers.
End of Party

Game Introduction
(To be read after all guests have arrived and have completed the craft necklace)
Before we begin I want to be sure you have all read your Mystery Guides. (If they haven't give them a few minutes to look it over)
You are about to solve a mystery. There will be four rounds. To get the clues for each round you must solve a puzzle. Some puzzles you will work on as a group and some puzzles you’ll try to solve yourself. After you successful y solve the puzzles you will get the clues for the next round. On each clue there will be one fact that you know about others in the group. Taking turns you will each share this fact with the group. The other fact is something about yourself. You do not read this to the group. Once everyone has a chance to read the fact about themselves there is a free period where you should ask one another questions to try to get as much information about each other as you can. You must answer all questions asked of you honestly. You can not lie about any of the facts you have read about yourself. If you don't know the answer to a question, and you can't make an educated guess from the information provided, say "I don't know." Once the four rounds are over and all the clues will be read each person will have a chance to guess which girl or girls committed the crime. Once everyone has guessed someone will read the solution to the mystery. Can you guess who did it?
If there are no questions we will begin the game.
You are a group of six friends from (name of your school or town) who have gathered for a reunion, a weekend of sun and fun in the beautiful Bahamas. I am (name of game host) and I’m the owner of the Blue Shell Inn. This morning I picked you up in my pontoon boat at a dock in Freeport and drove you the two miles off the coast from Freeport to the Blue Shell Inn on New Iguana Island. Once I secured the boat in the boat lift I showed you your rooms. You spent the afternoon getting settled, playing at the beach and making shell necklaces.
Now it is 6:00 and you have return to the Inn for dinner but I am very sad to tell you that the boat that I used to bring you to the island, the only boat on all of Little Iguana Island is no longer in the dock, it has drifted off to sea. I only own one two way radio, which I usually keep in the kitchen, but it has been smashed. There is no way to contact Freeport for help. We are stranded on the island. We only have enough food and water to for a few days. Until someone comes looking for us we are stranded here!

Character Clues
(Prior to the party, print out these clues and separate them into 4 different envelopes marked "Round 1," "Round 2," etc... Each envelope should have one clue for each character. When it is time to read the clues, characters take turn reading the clue to be shared, and then they read the clue not to be shared to themselves. The clues can be read in any order. After the clues are read there is a short question time period.)
Round 1 Nancy Drew
Things you know about others (to be shared with the group)
1) You noticed that you arrived at the island around 4:00pm and the boat was missing at 6:00pm so the boat must have been set free between those times.

Things you know about others (to be shared with the group)
3) You saw Mary Ann with some black stuff on her hands just before dinner.

Things you know about others (to be shared with the group)
4) You saw Annie trying to carry both a beach umbrella and a chair out to the beach by herself when you first got there. At the end of the boardwalk she fell, but Nancy Drew helped her up.
Things about yourself (keep private unless asked)
4) You want your old friends to like you so badly, that you would go to extreme measures to have extra time with them, even stranding them on this island for a few extra days. Then you could rescue them with the helicopter – and they would like you even more.
Round 1 Kenna S. Marty
Things you know about others (to be shared with the group)
1) From your calculations of how much water is left, you will all only have enough to drink for three more days.

Round 2 Kenna S. Marty
Things you know about others (to be shared with the group)
2) You ask everyone to check to see if they get cell phone reception out here on Little Iguana island. No one does.
Things about yourself (keep private unless asked)
2) The only reason you came to this reunion at all is to show the others how wrong they were to tease you and how successful you’ve become, especially Ginger, who always teased you the most.
Round 3 Kenna S. Marty
Things you know about others (to be shared with the group)
3) You noticed that Ashley came back wearing a new swimsuit at 5:15. Was she so rich that she had to change into a new suit every few hours?
Things about yourself (keep private unless asked)
3) Ok, admit it to yourself, you’re a klutz. You’ve always been a klutz. That’s why you’ve never done sports or anything. You’re worried about embarrassing yourself
Round 4 Kenna S. Marty
Things you know about others (to be shared with the group)
4) You saw Mary Ann and Nancy Drew poking at what looked like a squid on the beach earlier in the evening.
Things about yourself (keep private unless asked)
4) You are the one who smashed the radio. It was a total accident. You just went to the kitchen for a glass of water. But then the glasses started to fall out of the cabinet and as you dived to catch them you sent the radio flying. You were too embarrassed to tell anyone.
Round 1 Annie “Speedo” Rodgers
Things you know about others (to be shared with the group)
1) You noticed that it takes someone pretty strong to work that winch and let the boat down by themselves.
Things about yourself (keep private unless asked)
1) Really you aren’t sure you even want to go to collage at all. You’re not sure you even like Swimming all that much. Your true love is horses but your parents won’t let you ride because they don’t want to see you get hurt. Getting a swimming scholarship is the only way you can pay for collage.
Round 2 Annie “Speedo” Rodgers
Things you know about others (to be shared with the group)
2) You saw Nancy Drew head back to the Blue Shell once during the afternoon and returning with a wooden box.
Things about yourself (keep private unless asked)
2) You’ve always been jealous of Mary Ann who gets to live on a farm and gets to ride horses all the time. It’s not fair that she is so lucky and you are stuck swimming laps four hours a day.
Round 3 Annie “Speedo” Rodgers
Things you know about others (to be shared with the group)
3) You remember Kenna coming back to the beach around 5:00 with a Lemmon Sorbet. It sure looked good!
Things about yourself (keep private unless asked)
3) Yes, you could make the two mile swim back to shore. But you don’t really want to do all that work. And you don’t mind spending extra time with your friends all that much.
Round 4 Annie “Speedo” Rodgers
Things you know about others (to be shared with the group)
4) You remember seeing the radio before it was smashed at 4:45 when you used the restroom.
Things about yourself (keep private unless asked)
4) While you don’t mind this little adventure. It hasn’t helped you decide what to do with your life yet. Maybe a few extra days at the Ocean will help.

The Solution
Who did it?
Each of the six girls have motive for setting the boat adrift:
Nancy Drew loves a good mystery maybe enough to create her own.
Mary Ann is on her first vacation and wants to stretch out her time.
Ginger would like the publicity being stranded would generate.
Ashley is lonely and has a hard time making new friends in her new life.
Kenna was often teased by the other girls and may want revenge.
Annie is so confused about her life that she wouldn’t mind some extra time on the island to work things out.
At 4:00 the girls went down to the beach together. At 4:50 Kenna S. Marty went back to the Inn in search of a snack. As she reached for a glass in the kitchen, it started to fall and she dove to catch it. As she dove she accidentally fell on the radio, sending it smashing to the floor. It was a total accident but Kenna was so embarrassed by it, and didn’t want to be teased again, so she kept the whole thing a secret and returned to the beach as if nothing had happened.
At 5:00 Ashley McKnight III slipped away from the group and went down to the boat dock. She knew how to work the winch mechanism because she had sailed on her family’s boat many times. But this winch was older than the one she had worked with and she had a little trouble, as she leaned in to put pressure on the handle her swim suit got caught in the mechanism and tour it. Luckily she had brought several others to change into. Once the boat was found missing, her plan was to call in her private helicopter to rescue everyone. She was really surprised and worried when she learned that the one working radio on the island had been destroyed. Ashley was hopping that through rescuing all her friends they would like her more and she would get the love and attention from them that she didn’t get from her own parents who were too busy with their mult-milion dollar fast food empire to notice Ashley.
The next morning Annie “Speedo” Rodgers set out for the two mile swim to Freeport. It was no problem for her and within hours a rescue boat arrived at Little Iguana island. Everyone was saved and Annie got her picture on the front page of the local paper. Ginger was somewhat pleased to get a small mention in the article. Nancy was really happy to have found the scrap of fabric that solved another case. Mary Ann had some really nice souvenirs to take back to the farm. Kenna offered to pay for the radio she smashed. Ashley felt really bad about what she did and offered to pay for another reunion next year.
And they all lived happily ever after.
The End
